A charming album of 22 views of Paris and environs, c. 1890. Place de la Concorde, the Opera, Palais Royal, the Louvre, the Champs Elysees, Notre Dame, Versailles, the Tour Eiffel, and many others. Squarish 12mo. Concertina-style in original boards. A trace of light wear to boards and a bit of internal creasing, but the images are clean and sharp. Overall a very good copy of a very scarce and ephemeral item.

Hasegawa's engraving, Anemones et fleurs de champs dans un verre a facettes (Kyoto 368, also known as Bouquet sur fond de dentelle ), is considered one of his masterpieces. Folio (38 x 28 cm). Loose as issued. Missing title-page and justification, but with complete text and all prints. The Cami and Jeannisson prints have a bit of mat burn on the recto and the Lemagny a bit on the verso. The other three prints, including the Hasegawa, are FINE AND BRIGHT.

An unpublished autograph letter (2 pp, c. 125 words) from Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema, the most noted Victorian history painter, to Philadephia publisher Robert Barrie. In the letter he discusses, among other things, his Audience at Agrippa's (1875), now in the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, as well as Fireside Fancies by his wife Laura. 12mo. The first sheet bears the printed letterhead, 17, Grove End Road, St. John's Wood, N.W. On the (blank) verso there is evidence that the letter was steamed out of an album. Otherwise clean and bright.

AN OUTSTANDING SET OF THE FIRST AND ONLY EDITION OF ONE OF THE RAREST, MOST IMPORTANT, AND BEST-PRODUCED GENEALOGICAL WORKS OF THE 18th CENTURY. 1 leaf; xxxvii pp.; 1 leaf; 30, 457 pp.; 4 leaves; 533 pp. plus 13 genealogical tables (some folding), 10 etched plates (mainly views of estates), and 19 fine portraits (incuding 18 mezzotints engraved by Faber, and an engraving by Toms after Van Dyck and Lempriere). The introduction is in the first state, before the cancelation of p. xxxvii. Moreover, pp. [453-460] of volume II, printed in 1765 and rarely found, are present. This set is extra-illustrated with an engraved portrait (1807) of John Perceval in volume I and with an engraved view (1783) of Enmore Castle in volume II. Lowndes, who apparently inspected at most one set of this work, mistakenly states that pp. 446-447 of volume II are missing. In the set I offer, these pages are present. Lowndes also mistakenly calls for a map of part of the estate of John Perceval, which was in fact printed long after this work and does not form part of it, although it is sometimes found bound in. The fact that almost all of the portraits are executed in mezzotint indicates how small the press run was: only 25 to 50 impressions of a mezzotint could be taken before the plate would have shown signs of wear (and the impressions in this set are uniformly rich and brilliant). A few of the known sets of this work, indeed, are missing the portraits (which is even more understandable since the mezzotint portraits were engraved after the book was printed, some of them as late as 1747). The dozens of in-text coats of arms are engraved on copper, not wood, demonstrating that no expense was spared in the production of this lavish publication. The attractive engraved Northwick armorial bookplate (motto: Par ternis suppar ) in each volume. Beautifully printed on fine handmade Dutch laid paper, with the title-pages printed in red and black. Royal 8vo. ELEGANTLY BOUND BY SAMUEL CHARLES SMITH (signed) c. 1810 in full forest green morocco, covers gilt, spines elaborately gilt in six compartments. All edges gilt. Only tiny traces of wear, else A BRIGHT AND FINE SET. Lowndes I, 40 (giving an extensive collation); Lewine, p. 28; Graesse I, 116; Brunet I, 262; Moule DXLII (giving an astronomical price of 15 to 30 guineas in 1822.) Very rare. An important source for Norman and English history, and an impressive example of 18th-century English book production at its finest.

An extremely rare set: the volumes were issued separately, in small editions, over a 23-year period. Octavo. The first two volumes are uncut on Holland paper, and are rebound in quarter leather, with the original wraps bound in. The last volume is one of 100 copies on Madagascar, in original wraps, uncut and unopened. All three volumes are fine and bright.

This edition of Bernard's work was magnificently printed by Didot on extremely fine wove paper produced by Mme De la Garde, the first woman to produce wove paper (at the time, wove paper was also being produced in France by Etienne Montgolfier and by Mathieu Johannot, whose paper was far more common.) It is illustrated with SEVEN STUNNING ENGRAVINGS after EISEN and MARTINI, engraved by Duval, Helman, Letellier, and Palas. EDITION LIMITED TO ONLY THIRTY-FIVE (35) COPIES, MAKING THIS BY FAR THE RAREST OF ALL OF THE GREAT 18TH-CENTURY FRENCH ILLUSTRATED BOOKS. Large 8vo. Excellent margins. GORGEOUSLY BOUND BY JEAN-CLAUDE BOZERIAN (1762-1840) IN FULL CRIMSON LONG-GRAIN MOROCCO, with the SPINE, COVERS, AND TURN-INS ELEGANTLY GILT AND ALL EDGES GILT. Watered silk end-leaves. As though the binding weren't already elegant enough, it has a feature I have never before observed: on the recto of the front free endpaper is printed Les Trois Bernards , a poem by Voltaire celebrating Gentil-Bernard: Didot surely printed this leaf up specially, perhaps exclusively for the binding of this copy. Since this leaf is of course pasted to the silk endleaf, the poem is visible only when held in front of a bright light! There are tiny traces of wear to the lower edges and corners of the binding, else FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. In this book we find the finest paper, the finest printing, the finest illustration, and the finest binding imaginable--and it is one of only 35 copies, and in near-perfect condition. AN OUTSTANDING COPY OF A LEGENDARY RARITY.

La Belle Jardiniere was a chain of shops specializing in high-end sportswear for men, women, and children. The plates, appropriately enough, depict elegantly decked out people engaging in activities relevant to the month in question: Boutet de Monvel (January) depicts five impeccably-dressed children singing in the new year; Caran d'Ache (October) shows us a hunting scene; etc. 4to. 12 leaves, printed rectos only, tied together with two fine silk strings. EACH VOLUME HAS A STUNNING STIPPLE-ENGRAVED COLOR-PRINTED FRONTISPIECE, with additional hand coloring. Finely printed throughout (by Didot) on very fine wove paper. 12mo. Bound in half leather and marbled boards, c. 1900. Some wear to binding, internally clean, with the engraved frontispieces FINE AND BRIGHT, with the colors very fresh. Bres' other eight-volume set, the Simples Histoires trouvees dans un pot au lait , has far less interesting engravings and is far more common. Gumuchian, for example, had no fewer than 14 volumes from the Simples Histoires (one complete set, one half set, and two loose volumes--see 916-920). From Les Talents , the set I offer, he had only one loose volume (921). Exceedingly rare.

The drawing in volume I depicts the head of a man; that in volume II depicts the head of a woman. Both of these drawings are SIGNED IN PENCIL and are in Erni's purest style. 4to. Publisher's cloth. Leroy is perhaps the most underestimated book artist of the 20th century, and this book is his masterpiece: the copper engravings are technically complex and perfectly executed. Sigros' wood-engravings all depict the Devil, in extremely varied and imaginative ways. From an edition of 618 numbered copies, this is one of 475 beautifully printed on fine wove paper. In 1935, Chocolates Amatller, a Catalan company based in San Sadurni d'Anoia, issued 80 different trading cards depicting scenes from Don Quixote by Jose Segrelles. One of these brightly-colored chromolithograph cards was included in each box of chocolates sold by the company. I offer two proof sheets, ENTIRELY UNCUT, JUST AS THEY CAME OFF THE PRESS, with the complete collection of these 80 cards. The first sheet comprises 81 cards representing scenes from the first part of Don Quijote, the second sheet has 81 cards with scenes from the second part (so 162 scenes in all). 79 of the cards are in duplicate, and two are in triplicate, so TWO COMPLETE SETS COULD BE FORMED BY CUTTING THE SHEETS. Each sheet measures 100 x 70 cm. In excellent condition, with the colors very bright. An extraordinarily rare survival.

In 1980, shortly after taking up printmaking, Masafumi Yamamoto produced two absolutely astonishing erotic engravings of female nudes, still the only erotic works in his entire oeuvre. They are incredibly detailed and precise--yet extremely imaginative--burin engravings printed in relief (photos avalable on request). In 1981 he printed the editions and signed, dated, and justified the prints. Soon afterwards, Yamamoto adopted his well-known style of color intaglio printmaking. A LARGE-PAPER COPY ON DUTCH LAID PAPER (page size 22 x 14 cm, considerably larger than the Ray large-paper copy), WITH EXTREMELY FINE IMPRESSIONS OF THE ETCHINGS. Furthermore, THE TEXT IS IN THE FIRST STATE, BEFORE THE CORRECTION ON PAGE 162 (in virtually all copies, leaf X1 (pp 161-162) has been replaced by a corrected leaf). Large 8vo. This is a special copy printed for (and signed by) the author, on China paper, with a suite without text of the illustrations, borders, and ornaments. Prospectus laid in. From the collection of Luis de Caralt, a Barcelona publisher who was Spain's leading collector of modern illustrated books. 4to. Loose as issued in original board folder (neatly rebacked, ties mostly missing). Very good internally, with occasional foxing, mostly marginal. The prospectus reveals that a copy on China paper would have cost, at the time of issue, five times the price of a regular copy.
